根据英语语法的一般习惯，不定冠词总是置于被修饰名词前，若名词前有其他修饰语，则不定冠词通常要置于该修饰语前。但是，在某些特殊情况下，不定冠词的位置比较特殊，需特别注意。
一、与such和what连用时
不定冠词与such, what连用时，习惯上是置于它们之后，而不是之前。
1. such a
She is such a good friend. 她是那么好的朋友。
Such a boat is fit only for a calm sea. 这种船只适合在风平浪静的海上航行。
2. what a
What a great idea! 多么了不起的主意！
What a beautiful diamond ring! 多漂亮的钻石戒指！
She told him what a silly boy he was. 她告诉他是个多么蠢的孩子。
二、与rather和quite连用时
当一个单数可数名词前有rather或quite修饰时，不定冠词习惯上要放在这些词之后。如：
1. rather a
It was rather a pity. 这真是件憾事。
It was rather a success. 这件事相当成功。
2. quite a
That's quite a problem. 那很成问题。
Your daughter is quite a beauty. 你的女儿真是个大美人。
但是，当这类结构中的名词还带有形容词修饰语时，则不定冠词既可放在这些词语之前，也可放在这些词语之后。
He was rather a [a rather] naughty student. 他是一个相当淘气的学生。
由于名词student前有形容词naughty的修饰，所以既可说rather a naughty student，也可说a rather naughty student。
三、与half连用时
当不定冠词与half连用时，在通常情况下，我们总是说half a。如：
I need half a kilo. 我需要半公斤。
He arrived half an hour ago. 他是半小时前到达的。
在美国英语中，也可说成a half，如说a half kilo, a half hour等。但是，在某些特殊表达，我们必须要说a half，如要表示“几个半……”时，我们总是说…and a half。如：
I waited for an hour and a half [one and a half hours]. 我等了一个半钟头。
